What is the Story Behind
The Shiverick Cafe & Bar Name?
In 1660, settlers in Suckanesset (now Falmouth) included Reverend Samuel Shiverick, a Huguenot refugee. As pastor, he shaped the community, and Shiverick's Pond, named after him, became a vibrant hub for social and recreational activities.
Asa Shiverick (1790-1861), a descendant of Rev. Shiverick, established a shipbuilding legacy in Falmouth during the War of 1812. His sons, David, Paul, and Asa Jr., continued the family enterprise, crafting numerous vessels, including eight clipper ships from 1850 to 1862. Notably, The Bell of the West, their third clipper ship, was built in 1853 and marked their distinction as the sole builders of clipper ships on Cape Cod.

Falmouth, MA, boasts a rich maritime history, notably earning renown for its expertise in crafting clipper ships. The town's heritage is so deeply tied to this maritime legacy that the school's mascot and name proudly bear the moniker "Clippers." This homage reflects the community's historical significance in clipper ship construction. Amidst this seafaring backdrop, Shiverick Cafe & Bar stands as a nod to the town's past, strategically located across the street from Shiverick's Pond. The cafe not only pays tribute to the Shiverick family but also serves as a contemporary gathering spot, intertwining Falmouth's maritime history with its vibrant present.
